The Prophet-6 is Dave Smith’s tribute to the poly synth that started it all-the Sequential Prophet-5. The Prophet-6 features a 5-octave keyboard with velocity and aftertouch, along with pitch and modulation wheels and a step sequencer.

With two VCOs per voice and analog low-pass filters based on the classic Prophet-5 filter, the Prophet-6 also brings back an upgraded version of the Poly Mod section from the Prophet-5, along with delay, distortion, chorus, and phase shifter effects. However, production of the Prophet-6 continues in part because it shares subassemblies, including the case, keyboard, and most of the digital circuitry, with the Oberheim OB-6.The Dave Smith Instruments Prophet-6 brings back the Sequential Circuits legacy in a 6-voice polyphonic synthesizer with an all-analog signal path. The company had hoped for the Prophet-6 to be viewed by customers as the successor to the Prophet-5, but demand for a reproduction of the Prophet-5 continued, and Sequential subsequently released that as the "Rev 4" Prophet-5, leaving it with a somewhat odd pair of similar-appearing products in the lineup. A desktop module, lacking the keyboard and with a different panel layout but otherwise the same, is also offered.ĭSI introduced the Prophet-6 as its first product to be released under the Sequential name when the company re-branded itself as Sequential that year. The panel is laid out to resemble the Prophet-5, using the same types of knobs and switches the layout is somewhat similar but not an exact match, given that the Prophet-6 has a number of controls and parameters that the Prophet-5 didn't have.

Patch memory consists of 500 patch locations. Other performance controls consist of standard pitch and mod wheels, and an octave shift switch with a range of five octaves. The Prophet-6 also adds a velocity and aftertouch sensitive keyboard, which the Prophet-5 did not have.

Of course, a full MIDI implementation is included in the original Prophet-5 run, only units from near the end of the production run came from the factory with MIDI. Other new digital capabilities include an arpeggiator and a 64-step sequencer, both of which can be driven from a built-in clock source that includes a tap tempo feature. Signal routing is arranged such that when the effects are off, the effects circuitry is completely bypassed, and so the audio path is all analog.

The "poly mod" section allows additional routings, including routing VCO 2 frequency modulate VCO 1, and either envelope generator or the LFO to the VCO 1 shape.Ī selection of digital effects is included (the Prophet-5 had no built-in effects), including delay, reverb, chorusing, flanging, and ring modulation. The Prophet-6 adds a second VCF, a two-pole high pass filter, and a second envelope generator which can be routed to the cutoff frequency of either VCF. Unlike the original, the Prophet-6's VCOs have continuously variable waveforms, from triangle to sawtooth to pulse. Like its predecessor, the Prophet-6 has a voice setup based on two VCOs per voice, with a four- pole low pass VCF, a VCA with a dedicated ADSR envelope generator, and an LFO.

As befits its name, the Prophet-6 adds one voice to the Prophet-5 architecture, and so is 6-voice polyphonic. DSI saw the Prophet-6 as a new version of the Prophet-5 updated for the 21st circuitry, and so went about updating circuit designs and adding effects to the base Prophet-5 voice architecture. An analog synthesizer (except for digital effects), introduced by Sequential (Dave Smith Instruments) in 2015, as the then-envisioned successor to the Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 from the 1980s.
